![]() ![]() Like many works of academic sociology, American Hookup seems at first like a field report, but in truth it is an instrument of advocacy. Sociologist Lisa Wade’s text chronicles the rise of “hookup culture” at numerous colleges and universities (though in a failure of provenance Wade never refers to Wolfe’s seminal essay on the subject, a curious omission). That’s my takeaway after reading the new book American Hookup: The New Culture of Sex on Campus (Norton, 2017). The new sexualized college campus is just like the old one-except worse. “Among the children, hooking up was always a sexual experience, but the nature and extent of what they did could vary widely.” ![]() ![]() We want them to escape Sodom, and enter the new Canaan. ![]()
